Tyson Foods Names New Director of Chaplain Services

SPRINGDALE, Ark. –July 16, 2013 – Michael (Mike) D. Tarvin has been named the new Director of Chaplain Services for Tyson Foods, Inc.  In his new role, he is responsible for leading the more than 120 workplace chaplains employed by the company. He replaces Chaplain Rick McKinnie, who is retiring.

Before joining Tyson Foods, Tarvin served honorably with the U.S. Army for more than 30 years. He served as chaplain with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 25th Infantry Division.  He worked as the Chief of Pastoral Care at Evans Army Community Hospital at Ft. Carson, Colorado, and later served as Chief of Pastoral Care at the Medical Center at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Tarvin was also senior chaplain of Multi-National Corps in Iraq, where he supervised more than 300 chaplains in combat operations. In addition, he also served as Senior Chaplain for United States Army Forces Command.

Tarvin is an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps distinguished graduate from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He is also a graduate of the Army Ranger School, Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Air Assault School, Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College and has graduate degrees from Boston University, Brite Divinity School and the U.S. Army War College.

Tyson Foods’ chaplaincy program was started by Chairman John Tyson in October 2000. It provides pastoral care to the company’s employees and their families, regardless of their religious affiliation or beliefs. The program involves full and part-time chaplains at many Tyson locations who informally make themselves available to talk to employees.  One of the core values of Tyson Foods is to be a faith-friendly company.  This means treating all faiths with dignity and respect.
