For more than 65 years, Tyson Foods, Inc. has been committed to providing our customers and consumers with quality food they can trust. As the industry leader, Tyson has a long-standing commitment to food safety that extends from the farm to the table.
At Tyson, our 110,000 Team Members are passionate about producing high-quality, great-tasting, and safe food products. Tyson's Food Wise™ program is designed to help educate our customers and consumers on the comprehensive food safety practices that exist in all areas of the Tyson business and provide tips to bring food safety techniques into the home. The Food Wise program encompasses the following areas: Cooking Smart™, Team Member Training, Food Safety at the Plants, and Laboratory Practices.
Cooking Smart
Through this consumer education program, we are teaching the "3 C's:" Chill, Clean, and Cook. Chill food to the proper storage temperature, clean hands and utensils before and after cooking, and cook chicken to recommended temperatures.
We are spreading the word about Cooking Smart through consumer events, packaging, and a dedicated web site. On the web site, you will find out what we are doing at Tyson to produce wholesome products and what you can do at home to keep them that way.
International Food Safety Council
Through our Food Service Division, Tyson is a sponsor of the IFSC, which is part of the
National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The IFSC's mission is to heighten awareness of the importance of food safety education. It supports every aspect of the industry: operators, schools, state associations, regulatory agencies, and the media.
Tyson is a founding member of the IFSC ServSafe program. ServSafe is the premier training vehicle used by foodservice operators to teach employees proper food handling.
Advanced Case and Pallet Labeling
In our facilities, we are using a system to label and accurately track each box of product through our warehousing and distribution system. Using a system called Supplies Labels, Applies Promptly, or "SLAP," we can pinpoint the time and location that each case of product was produced. Through computer tracking, we can follow that product through the warehousing and distribution system to the customer's loading dock.
In the unlikely event of a product recall, we can quickly locate each case of product that is in question and notify our storage facilities and customers of the status of the items.
Food Marketing Institute Foundation
Tyson is a Silver Link Sponsor of the
Food Marketing Institute Foundation and its efforts to educate consumers on the issues of food safety and proper food handling. Since its launching in 1998, the
FMI Foundation's
Safeguarding Our Last Link campaign has made significant grants toward their two most prominent efforts: Fight BAC!™ and Total Food Safety Management.
Fight BAC!™ (bacteria) is a consumer education effort initiated by the Partnership for Food Safety Education, a unique public-private coalition of industry, government, and consumer groups. Four carefully developed messages — keeping hands and surfaces clean, preventing cross contamination, cooking to proper temperature, and refrigerating promptly — are integral parts of Fight BAC!™.
Along with educating the consumer, another Foundation funding priority is assuring that associates at the retail level understand and use the best food safety practices. The Total Food Safety Management program is targeted in this area.
